UNÉ brings soulful, universal sound

With a jazzy, silky sound, Une's self titled debut CD sounds as if he's been in the music industry for decades.

Une, a native Detroiter named
Burrell “Sonny” Bailey chose the name Une (pronounced You-Nay) because it means universal, soulful, eternal one -- the very feelings and impressions he wants to leave with listeners.

Bailey says his sound stems from his humble but “great” childhood.

Growing up in the Cass Corridor on Temple and Fourth, Bailey says his older brother made him sing on street corners. Enjoying the attention and rush associated with performing, he began to live and breathe music and the entertainment industry.

As he aged in Detroit, Une continued to make a name for himself as a multitalented artist.

He acted in several stage plays around the city including Ain't Nothin' like Family, performed at the Detroit Opera House and The Final Word, which starred the late Johnnie Cochran and Amen actor Clifton Davis.

Although his talent in his hometown was recognized, Une wanted more. After traveling back and forth to LA from Detroit for years, He decided to live in the land of stars full time a year ago.

“[But] Detroit is really the training ground,” says Une. It prepared me for what I've accomplished this far.

Inspired by artists like Marvin Gaye--Une remade his classic “Sexual Healing”-- Luther Vandross, John Legend, Anthony Hamilton, Jamie Foxx and the Beatles, Une says his sound is soulful, smooth, soothing and intimate.

Another Detroiter played a huge part in this musical project. Sterling G, one of the main producers on the album hails from Detroit Jefferies Projects.

Une says fate brought the two together in L.A.

And he wants to use all his artistic talents. In addition to music a book and an independent film chronicling his life in Detroit are slated for release soon.

Une will perform in Detroit at the Museum of African American History Sept. 30 from 7:30 to 10 p.m.

Une will be released later this month.

“I take [the audience] on a journey with me,” says Une. “I believe I have a message of love and hope and I want to share that with the world.”
